The choice of accounting account for a capitalization contract is not just a simple classification reflex. Two accounts from the General Chart of Accounts (PCG) compete for the position, and a posting error distorts both the balance sheet and the tax result. The difficulty lies in the fact that the qualification depends less on the commercial label of the product than on the economic reality of the contract held by the company.

Account 271 or Account 508: Accounting Classification Criteria for a Capitalization Contract

The PCG offers two main accounts to record a capitalization contract subscribed by a legal entity. The account 271 (fixed securities) accommodates investments intended to be held long-term. The account 508 (other short-term financial investments) corresponds to cash surpluses invested in the short term.

The allocation between these two accounts is based on the intention of holding and the contractual characteristics. A contract subscribed for several years, backed by illiquid units of account, logically falls under financial fixed assets. A short-term contract, redeemable without penalty and primarily invested in euro funds, is more akin to a cash investment.

The key question for performing the accounting for a capitalization contract remains the actual substance of the contract: rights held, planned redemption terms, and effective holding horizon.

Criterion Account 271 (fixed asset) Account 508 (short-term investment)
Planned holding duration More than one fiscal year Less than or equal to one fiscal year
Management intention Long-term holding, wealth strategy Investment of cash surplus
Liquidity of the asset Units of account, diversified supports Euro funds, quick redemption
Impact on the balance sheet Fixed asset Current asset
Potential depreciation Provision for long-term depreciation Provision for temporary depreciation

Difference Between Book Value and Tax Result for a Corporate Taxpayer

Classifying in the correct account does not solve everything. For a legal entity subject to corporate tax, the tax treatment follows a timeline distinct from the accounting treatment. Article 238 septies E of the General Tax Code requires the inclusion of a product calculated on a flat-rate basis each fiscal year, even in the absence of redemption.

This mechanism known as the “redemption premium” obliges the company to recognize a theoretical tax product based on the average rate of government bonds (TME) at the time of subscription. With the recent rise in TME, this fictitious product is no longer negligible.

In accounting, the value of the contract remains recorded at its historical cost (excluding euro funds where accrued interest is recognized). The gap between the tax product included each year and the book value of the contract necessitates a rigorous off-balance-sheet tracking, year by year.

What Partial Redemption Changes in Tracking

In the case of a partial redemption, the difference between the redeemed amount and the share of the acquisition cost generates an accounting result. The tax result, on the other hand, must be adjusted for flat-rate products already taxed in previous years to avoid double taxation.

A dedicated tracking table, separate from the general ledger, then becomes the central supporting document. Without this document, the risk of erroneous tax reintegration significantly increases with each redemption.

ANC Regulation 2022-06: Check Old Accounting Entry Schemes

The ANC Regulation 2022-06, applicable to fiscal years starting from January 1, 2025, modifies the presentation of the income statement and certain accounts related to the disposal of financial assets. The accounting entry models published before this date must be verified.

Among the points to check:

  • The accounts of financial charges and products used during the disposal or redemption, some of which have been reallocated by the new regulation
  • The presentation of gains or losses in the income statement, which now follows an updated nomenclature
  • The treatment of provisions for depreciation on financial investments, which remains subject to the general rules of the PCG but whose associated account may differ depending on the nature of the contract

An accountant using an entry scheme prior to 2025 to account for a capitalization contract exposes themselves to presentation inconsistencies when preparing annual accounts.

Capitalization Contract and Life Insurance: The Trap of Identical Treatment

Life insurance and capitalization contracts share similar mechanisms (units of account, euro funds, partial redemptions). But a capitalization contract is not an insurance operation: it does not cover any risk related to human life and does not involve an insured party.

This legal distinction has direct accounting consequences:

  • The “key person” insurance contract is recorded as an expense (account 616) and then as exceptional income upon settlement, whereas the capitalization contract remains a financial asset on the balance sheet
  • The qualification of the asset differs: the capitalization contract is a financial security, not a claim against an insurer conditioned on a random event
  • The tax regime of Article 238 septies E applies specifically to capitalization contracts held by corporate taxpayers, not to life insurance contracts subscribed in a professional context

Applying by analogy the accounting scheme of life insurance to a capitalization contract can lead to posting errors, timing of product recognition, and tax treatment issues.

The correct account depends on the economic reality of the contract, not its commercial name. The only data that distinguishes between 271 and 508 remains the documented intention of holding. And regardless of the box chosen on the balance sheet, the off-balance-sheet tax tracking year by year constitutes the true centerpiece of the file.
